Uniforms

In regards to the Mormon Church's dress codes I saw the following quote by Matt Elggren:

"The uniform for men is an expression of their alignment with authority. The uniform for women is an expression of their submission to authority."

  1. I also think the LDS clothing styles are reflective of a culture that wants to de-sexualize women out of a feigned respect, but also to condition them to think of themselves as more matronly servants rather than sensual curvy beings. The drab colors, lack of form, dowdy floral prints and Victorian collars all create a sense of church lady propriety that sap individuality and creativity from the women. If you want to create a scandal and spur spontaneous gossip, wear a red dress that hugs your curves. Even if it covers the cleavage and top of the arms and comes modestly to the top of the knee, it makes the men turn their heads and the women start wagging their tongues. Most of the pressure inside the church for the frumpiness comes from the women who impose it on each other.

  2. That just frustrates me... I don't want the way I dress to say anything except... I'm Jen, and I like the color green... (Oh and I really like to match!)

Sometimes I think I could go back to church, but I would wear pants. ...and let the tongue waggin' begin...
